SUN VALLEY ICE SKATING, A PART OF AMERICAN HISTORY

Sun Valley Serenade, starring Sonja Henie, is said to have clinched Sun Valley's renown. It highlighted skiing and ice skating and made it look like Sun Valley, Idaho was the most romantic place for it all.

Promotional shorts had been viewed by movie audiences showing Sun Valley as Idaho's playground for society but the movie Sun Valley Serenade emblazoned the resort in the American psyche.

Harriman, the founder of Sun Valley Resort, wanted to make sure ice skating became one of the Valley's main areas of sport so hired Audrey Peppe, Olympian in 1932, 1926 and 1940 to run the original ice skating program. Gretchen and Don Fraser performed in some of the early ice shows at the Sun Valley Lodge, although many of the early performers were guests or employees.

Sun Valley got the attention of the ice skating world as it did the
Olympic world.

Sun Vally Lodge

The first ice surface was only 120 by 60 feet on the southwest side of the Lodge. Today's rink is in the same location but it was enlarged in 1955 to 180 by 90 feet. In the early days additional rinks were created around the resort by flooding the tennis courts in the winter, using a natural ice area on the lawn between the Sun Valley Inn and the Sun Valley Lodge and skating on a frozen pond in front of the Inn that today is heated for the swans. Damming Trail Creek provided frozen ponds outside the Sun Valley Inn entrance and in front of the Sun Valley Opera
House.

Since Sun Valley had one of the only covered, outdoor, artificial ice surfaces for years, competitive skaters came to the resort in its early years for training. Dick Button and Linda Fratianne are some of those early skaters who came.

Since the 1970's Sun Valley's ice show included international skating champions from around the world. Dorothy Hamill,

Scott Hamilton, Peggy Fleming, Michael Seibert, Kitty & Peter CarruthersTai Babilonia & Randy Gardner, Katarina Witt,  Charlie Tickner,  Tara Lipinski, Oksana Baiul and Judy Blumbers have all skated in Sun Valley.

Today, throughout the summer,
ice shows are preformed on the now famous Sun Valley Lodge ice rink every Saturday evening after an outdoor dinner on the lawn. Just call Cheryl Concannon, Realtor, at 208-720-4806 when you want to know more about the Sun Valley Resort real estate market.
