HOW COOL - THE FIRST AMERICAN SKI RESORT
|
Tall and handsome, W. Averell Harriman, the founder of Sun Valley Resort, was a playboy and married three times. He founded the resort in 1936, was Chairman of the Union Pacific Railroad and, later, Governor of New York. Harriman was twice a Democratic Party candidate for President of the United States and served as advisor to Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Jimmy Carter. |

|
For the Harriman family, Idaho had been a vacation destination before the idea of a ski resort ever evolved. Oregon Short Line stockholders had bought thousands of acres along the Yellowstone Branch of The Union Pacific and the Henry's Fork of the Snake River near Island Park, creating Island Park Land and Cattle Company. E. H. Harriman, Averell's father, had bought a share in Island Park so the children spent each summer on this remote Idaho land called Railroad Ranch. Idaho became a large part of the Harriman family tradition and Sun Valley became the rendezvous of Hollywood and the social East. |

KETCHUM, IDAHO, is considered to have been founded by Dave Ketchum, who discovered the first lead and silver deposits in the northwestern part of the Valley, and spent his only winter there in a log cabin. Numerous people were entering the Wood River Valley just as Dave Ketchum was leaving. When they applied for a post office near Ketchum's old cabin, Dave Ketchum's name must have appeared on the application as the post office grant, when delivered in 1880, bore his name and thus the town's name was set. At that time Ketchum town consisted of mining shanty's and gambling halls but grew to seven stores, six livery stables, seven blacksmith shops and salons and two hotels when a group of men created the Town's first plans.

THE SUN VALLEY OPERA HOUSE Situated in the heart of Sun Valley Village, the Opera House was built in 1937 and serves as Sun Valley's charming 340-seat theatre.

THE KNEEDERY IN KETCHUM In 1880, the town of Ketchum, named after David Ketchum, a trapper and guide, was one of the richest mining areas in the Northwest. | |

While Ernest Hemingway hung out at the Casino during the days of legal gambling in Idaho, today the Casino exists as a downtown bar. Next to the Casino is The Roosevelt Tavern and Grille with both Whiskey Jacques Restaurant and Nightclub and the Sawtooth Club immediately across the street. Only a block away is the long time standard, the Pioneer Saloon or as affectionately called by locals "The Pio", while down the street is underground Cellar Pub, the Wine Bar and the unadvertised, without any signage "Martini Bar".
For fine dining in Ketchum you have many choices but El Naso, Ciro-Pizza and Wine Bar and The Christiania Restaurant stand out and often require reservations.
Ketchum has its share of fine sushi, Tai and Chinese cuisine for variety and you must not miss the local hamburger joint "Grumpy's".

In the early days of the resort a promoter, by the name of Steve Hannagan, who had turned a stretch of sand into Miami Beach with publicity, was hired by Harriman to 'promote' the new destination resort. Hannagan & Associates were known to be one of the best PR firms in the country. It was Hannagan who came up with the name of "Sun Valley" and the concept of a handsome young man skiing shirtless in the sunshine.

Near the end of construction newspapers and magazines were heralding the coming of America's St. Moritz. "All Hollywood is chomping at the bit to descend on Sun Valley", or "Hollywood is moving to Sun Valley for New Year's Eve. Today descendants of early visitors and residents mix and mingle among the locals, tourists and up and coming moguls and stars. Everyone pretty much knows everyone and isn't impressed by anyone. Attire is casual to refined, depending, but you won't see any red cowgirl hats in Sun Valley. You could just as easily end up talking to the son of a diplomat, a well-known athlete as someone just like you.

Hannagan & Associates were known to be one of the best PR firms in the country. It was Hannagan who came up with the name of "Sun Valley" and the concept of a handsome young man skiing shirtless in the sunshine. Ads proclaimed, "Winter Sports under a summer sun in Sun Valley".
