Coming Soon to Sun Valley Idaho

In 1935, Count Felix Schaffgotsch was commissioned by Union Pacific Railroad to find the perfect North American ski destination. After months of exploring the western United States, the count found Ketchum Valley and was overwhelmed by the area’s terrain features and charm.

Sun Valley opened to the public for the winter of 1936.

Sun Valleys' peak conditions are usually from mid-January through March. According to data, the resort has about three-fourths of its terrain available prior to Christmas Day, so even early season skiing is bountiful. ... Opening day at Sun Valley is often on Thanksgiving Day each year, but how much of the resort is open for skiing depends on the amount of snow.
